sorry ignorance what is the meaning of R & B?
I recently started playing bass and I think it has helped my guitar playing. It stretches my fingers more.
That changes from genre to genre though. If you are playing some of the metal styles…then metal guitar might not be that dissimilar. If you;re playing say Funk or R&B then you’re talking two different beasts.
A good beginner bass will depend on: your budget, your goals, the size of your hands. Etc. Best way is to go to a good bass shop and play a few and see what feels best. Whether guitar helps with bass depends on the techniques and styles of guitar you’ve learned (e.g. if you’ve been bashing out chords mainly then probably not much). The thing that’s different is the CONCEPTION behind what a bass does and what a guitar does.
if i do ever get the chance to get a cheap bass guitar, what is a good beginner bass? and does 4 years of guitar help at all on playing bass? since both are string instruments and such

You can play it there….same notes of course. But it makes the transition to the verse less smooth. But it’s always good to test out different placements of notes and stuff.
I always thought that the main riff was 12th fret on the D string and 12th fret of the A

IT totally depends on the size of your bass and the size of your hands….my best bet would be to find a shop near you where the staff actually know their shit and go down and try some out. If you have small hands for example you don’t wanna be getting something that’s precision sized.
i realise it’s probably down to the individual but what would you say is the best bass to start with, looking around seems like squier j bass is a good starting point.

glad it’s helping! Remember it’s not practice that makes perfect, it’s deliberate practice that makes perfect! If in doubt, slow it down and play it perfectly a bunch of times slowly and only then start working on the tempo.
