I’m 16, but I haven’t a clue what scales, chords, modes or other things I should learn and practise in order to get better at improvising jazz or blues solos and similar things. Do you perhaps have some advice for a long-term path to take?

What I like best is that his personality is so apparent in his playing. I can hear the excitement and enthusiasm…he’s not like ‘Yeah, I’m The Mahn, now check out this sophisticated lick.’ Because of that and his obvious command of the instrument I listened through the entire song happily.
The chordal lick @ 1:16 was sweeter than splenda.

while improvising do you think more about soloing over the individual chords, like arpeggios over the chords? what’s your basic approach?
Well, there’s really no way to measure that, unfortunately. In some ways, I can, and in some ways, I still can’t. I’m always finding new voicings, and always will be!
thanks for the detailed reply, i will do that! how long did it take you to be able to change between jazz chords smoothly? or to the point where you can pick it up easily?
Thanks! The best advice I can give is to play and learn as many tunes as possible, and try and find as many different ways of understanding the changes of a tune as a whole, not as individual chords.
Quickly moving between voicings is tough, no denying that. I would try and isolate certain voicings that you have trouble with, and then create some sort of drill that utilizes all of them – even if that’s just strumming them. Then go up and down the neck with the drill, and repeat every day!
very nice, any tips on books etc to practiec jazz chord changes? how does one get to teh point you can esasliy move between the most strangest of chord fingerings?
