Slash Doesn’t use the second technique.

Hey tom, If your doing it correctly there should be no tension in the hand, i assume your talking about the thumb behind the neck approach? Make sure your sitting with the guitar on your left knee so your body doesnt get in the way and cause an odd angle, it should be relaxed. Maybe you could post a picture of your hand position on my FB page and other members could help?

Maybe I’m wrong but the angle of your wrist in the second position looks severe. I’m experiencing numbness in my thumb and was looking up the cause… just wondering if anyone had any tips to alleviate the stress to my fretting hand and if anyone could definitively say that the angle is potential means for injury. Am i practicing bad posture?

Btw,it starts at 2:18 but freeze at 2:34 …that’s what i was referring to.

That last guy said not to put the thumb like that,in classical position. I tried to say that it was most natural to me,but what do i know? That’s irritating though…i hear 15 different things from so many different “experts.” One “expert” says the other “experts” way is wrong & vice versa. You can see how this is confusing,& a bit frustrating to a student of the game, right? I listened to some guys. Now my shoulder & wrist kill me. I always knew why,but they said it was just part of it…my *ss!

    I am 17

Dont worry, when you first start you may feel like this but its usually not the case. how old are you? it may be more technique then size of hands. You should try and use the thumb behind the neck position if you need the extra reach

  • FayeandAbyulous 11 years ago

I have really small hands so atm i find it hard to reach even four threats in the first position, will it come easier in time or should i use the second position?

Oh a classical has “Nylon” strings a much softer material then traditional acoustics like the one im holding. A classical has a softer sound. The strings on an acoustic like mine has Steel Strings, classical has Nylon (almost like plastic looking) Strings. Hope that helps, any more questions head to the forum on the website
