i enjoy both knowing the notes on the neck and knowing my scales. each scale has a unique sound and if you know the fretboard you can play them anywhere..why not have both?
yes it would be the same shape but if you start on A string but if you move it one string higher say starting on the D string you would have to compensate for the half step
